Teaching Personal Financial Litearcy

The demand for PFL training across the USA has been accelerating since 2010. Many states including our own Colorado Department of Education, have created new academic content standards. CCEE has discovered that each of the 178 school districts in Colorado, in response to the PFL mandate, has its own approach, its own timetable and plan for implementing PFL. But some realities are overarching.

It’s worth noting that all elementary teachers (K-5) are expected to incorporate PFL into their teaching. PFL is embedded in the math and social studies (economics) standards, and each elementary teacher is responsible for helping his or her students master that knowledge and internalize the accompanying skills and behaviors. The reality is that as active as CCEE (and other organizations like Jump$tart and Junior Achievement) have been in promoting PFL training, the potential demand, especially at the elementary level, simply exceeds the capacity to offer the training. There are nearly 900,000 public and private school students in the state of Colorado. About half of those are elementary students. That translates into somewhere around 18,000 elementary teachers (calculated at 450,000 students divided into individual classes of 25). At the secondary level, it’s the economics, social studies, business or consumer family studies and perhaps math teachers who will end up delivering PFL. At the elementary level, EVERY teacher, all 18,000, will be expected to incorporate PFL into their instructional repertoire. CCEE has come to the conclusion that it is at the elementary level where the most immediate demand will be, and it is the most problematic in terms of professional development. These courses and resources help teachers address this challenge.

LearnPFL was created for teachers but that won’t stop anyone interested in learning about personal finance from enjoying these great films.

Choose from the links on the left to learn more about how our economy works and the complex forces to affect our financial fortunes. These films are fun and relevant for anyone. They’re very entertaining while also illuminating exceedingly important topics including:

    • understanding the economy
    • how markets work
    • markets for goods, labor, and capital
    • saving, borrowing investing
    • insuring and protecting

Personal Finance in the Classroom

LearnPFL was created for elementary school teachers across the USA who are faced with the additional challenge of meeting standards in personal financial literacy with children as young as five. To assist these teachers we’ve created four ways to engage with PFL:

Accredited Professional Development Course – taught online and facilitated by a Council for Economic Education certified teacher. This course is available to teachers nationwide with free places available to a limited number of Colorado teachers. (FEE)

Self-Paced Online Course is similar in content and approach but does not provide accreditation or the same level of instructional facilitation. This course is under development and will be available soon. (FEE)

Open Learning Resources is over four hours of engaging films covering essential topics in personal finance and economics. These films and supporting resources will enable the teaching of PFL through a sound foundation in economics and finance. (FREE)

LearnPFL Youtube Channel includes all films featured in the Open Learning Resources in a less structured format. The YouTube channel is ideal for teachers wishing to view and share only a selection of films. (FREE)

Accredited Professional Development

WHAT IS IT?

The Colorado Council for Economic Education, through the financial support of Great-West Financial, is offering this professional development option to any teacher, school or district interested in incorporating financial literacy (PFL) with economic reasoning into their elementary (K-5) curriculum. Teachers taking this standards-based course can expect to receive professional development in three dimensions: 1) content from a university professor familiar with PFL; 2) pedagogy and methods from elementary teachers experienced in PFL (grade bands K-2 and 3-5 separated); 3) grade-level appropriate resources that are classroom ready (Financial Fitness for Life). The course has been designed to be engaging and enlightening and will be managed by a professor experienced in the online learning environment.

I liked the teaching videos and the hands on student activities that went along with each PFL concept. I also liked the videos to help my understanding of all the basic PFL concepts that were taught and we should know if we are going to be teaching these concepts to our students.
I loved how the course was structured into financial topics. It helped me see how I can structure my own teaching into these same topics.
I enjoyed learning about the intricacies of our financial world- from simple wants and needs to complex financial markets and investing. I feel more knowledgeable and confident to make better decisions- or ask for help! CREDIT AND TIME COMMITMENT

One can opt to receive two semester credit hours (graduate level continuing professional education credit) from UCCS, $140 payable to UCCS. The standard ratio of clock time to credit has been applied. Therefore, approximately 30 total hours of contact time, approximately five hours per week, is expected. Times will vary, depending on one’s individual pace of learning.

ENROLLMENT INCLUDES:
24/7 online access to the course portal; a flash drive containing the K-12 lessons from Financial Fitness for Life (Teacher Guides and Student Workbooks, from the national Council for Economic Education, 2010) with ready-to-go lessons to bring into your classroom.

CANCELLATION POLICY:
CCEE must be notified of cancellation at least 10 days in advance of the class start date. If not, your $50 refundable deposit will be forfeited. Additionally, if you do not complete the course, the FFFL resource must be returned to CCEE or you will be charged the retail price.
